Easter and Food

Thinking back to when I was a child, Easter meant lamb (and mountains of chocolate eggs, of course).

The problem was I couldn’t stand lamb – such a strong, overwhelming flavour, and cooked ‘pink’, too?!?! Plus, I couldn’t help but think of the little balls of fluff that I enjoyed watching jump around in the fields, seemingly without a care in the world. Little did they know….

This, coupled with the fact that I was an incredibly fussy eater as a child, did not help my situation when Easter swung around. I was expected to finish off every morsel presented on my plate, before I could get my mitts on all of those delicious chocolate eggs!

These days it couldn’t be more different – I absolutely love lamb: be it 6hr slow-roasted shoulder, marinated overnight in yoghurt and Moroccan spices; seared fillet or rack of lamb with a zingy Salsa Verde; or a butterflied leg of lamb whacked on the BBQ…yes, of course, served pink!! And as for the chocolate eggs? You can keep ‘em. Not fussed, at all. How things change.

Of course what I failed to understand, was that the whole thing was about much more than just that. The lamb and the chocolate eggs were simply a vessel; it was obviously about being together as a family and sharing food around the table with one another. If I really think about it, that’s what I remember most, and quite possibly has lead me to where I am now, what I do and the type of food I like to create – food that is absolutely and wholeheartedly meant to be to shared.

It’s a few days off yet, but Happy Easter, All. Enjoy the lamb, chocolate, or whatever it is that you might serve up this weekend. But most of all enjoy sharing the moment.
