Divorce, Business and Mediation: A Family Lawyer Explains
Family Lawyer Warns Divorce Could Cost You More Than Your Marriage in New Podcast Episode
By Adam Hanslow-Smith, Dandelion Video Production
Jill Roberts, Partner at Knights, features in the latest episode of Dandelion Video Production’s What Do You Do? podcast – setting the record straight about what most people think they know about family law.
Roberts, who specialises in family law, argues that getting a lawyer involved early doesn’t make a separation worse – it can actually prevent it. “Lawyers aren’t going to be involved with your lives afterwards,” she says, pointing out that former partners, particularly those with children, will need to maintain a relationship long after the legal process ends.
One of the episode’s less obvious revelations is the reach of the family courts into business. A divorce without a prenuptial agreement in place can result in company shares being divided between partners – something Roberts says many business owners simply haven’t considered.
She also addresses the assumption that court is inevitable. Mediation and out-of-court settlements are always explored first, and Roberts is clear that handing a decision about your life to a judge should always be the last resort.
