How to have ‘Any Weather’ Style this Spring
How to have ‘any weather’ style this Spring
By Liz Gaffer, Personal Stylist
We’ve seen the highest temperatures this last month as well as spring showers. Whilst the weather forecast is worth checking when you are pulling together your outfit for the day, it can always change. This means you either carry clothes for every eventuality or run the risk of feeling unprepared. Here’s my three step approach for organising your wardrobe so that you are always ‘covered’ for the weather and your own style.
1 Identify key pieces that can work with all outfits
To make your choice of outfit easier every day, there are a few items that will work with other items to create outfits, and will ensure you are prepared for any weather.
- A short structured jacket e.g. biker jacket or Chanel style jacket. Structured jackets bring smartness to an outfit, and can provide warmth if the temperature drops.
- A tote or large hand bag (useful for carrying a spare jumper, umbrella, water, make-up etc). Patents are perfect for wet weather and bring some shine to cloudy days in the summer.
- Multi-functional shoes that work with anything from a summer dress to jeans e.g a smart trainers, or Mary Janes.
- A solid umbrella!
Put these items on one end of your wardrobe rail, or on your bed so that you can move on to the next step of building your capsule wardrobe.
2 Look for a colour or style theme that appears in your key pieces. This will help build the rest of your ‘any weather’ capsule
We often have a variety of styles and colours in our wardrobes. Whatever your style direction, if the weather looks variable, build a capsule that works around the key pieces you have chosen.
- What colours are they? Choose other items that sit well with them, then put them to one side on your wardrobe rail or on the bed.
- What style are they? e.g. a classic or romantic. Again sifting through the other items in your wardrobe, find what works best with these key pieces.
3 Layer up and down for shape and style
The key to your effortless style and comfort is to have items that you can put on or take off when the weather changes. Layering can look current and flatter your shape, as well as keeping your temperature.
- Consider the length of the layers. It is ideal to have the shortest item on top. This avoids lumps and creases and can, depending on your shape, make you look taller and slimmer (if that’s what you want!).
- Keep items lightweight and breathable. If you are looking for layers for warmth, any weight of fabric will do this once layered so you won’t have to consider heavy jumpers or jackets.
- Make sure you are happy with the layer closest to your body. We all know what it’s like when it suddenly gets hot and you strip off to say one top, it’s important you feel comfortable just wearing that.
Putting a capsule together will take some time and thought, but it will save you time in the week and deliver great smugness.
