SEO for Bath businesses: Five tips to stop your website from being invisible
By Joanna Lewis, owner and founder of Joanna Lewis Media

You’ve invested time, money, and energy into building a stunning website. It loads fast, looks incredible, and perfectly reflects your brand. There’s just one problem: no one is seeing it.

This is the reality for many Bath business owners. With over 20 years of content experience and nearly a decade in digital, I frequently work with business owners who come to me feeling frustrated that, despite having a beautiful website, it simply isn’t generating visibility, enquiries or consistent traffic from search engines. In most cases, the issue isn’t the website itself; it’s that it hasn’t been built or supported with SEO (search engine optimisation) in mind.

A website without ongoing SEO is like opening a shop in the middle of a desert, technically open, but practically invisible. SEO is what connects your business to people actively searching for what you offer, and investing in ongoing SEO ultimately drives more traffic, higher sales, and greater engagement.

Drawing on my experience supporting Bath businesses with SEO strategies and digital visibility at my marketing consultancy, Joanna Lewis Media, as well as global brands as Head of Content for one of the world’s leading ultra-luxury marketing agencies, I’ve seen how small, consistent changes can make a significant difference in how a website performs in search results.

The key point here is to remember that SEO is not a one-time task. It’s an ongoing process that takes time and effort but offers significant long-term gains. Search engines reward websites that are active, relevant, and consistently improving. Without ongoing SEO efforts, even the best-designed site will fade into obscurity.

If you want your website to start showing up in search results, read on. Here, I’m going to share five ways you can boost your SEO.

The top 5 SEO strategies every Bath business needs to implement

Here are my top 5 SEO strategies for Bath businesses to implement immediately to get your website showing up in search results.

1. On-page SEO: The foundations

On-page SEO ensures that your website clearly communicates its content to search engines. Getting the foundations right is essential, and almost all my SEO consultancy in Bath starts with reworking, fixing, or implementing from scratch some or all of the following:

  • Optimised title tags and meta descriptions. If you don’t have metas, your site is at a major disadvantage. Metas are the short snippets of text that tell search engines what a page is about and appear in search results as the clickable headline and description. Google Chrome’s SEO Meta Checker is a handy tool that lets you quickly check your site’s meta tags. Make sure they are not too short or too long. For meta titles, the ideal character count is around 55; for meta descriptions, it’s around 155. Portent’s Google SERP Preview is a super handy tool for this.
  • Proper use of headings (H1, H2, etc.). Content architecture is vital because it enables search engines to fully crawl and understand the entire page and also enhances readability. It goes without saying that headings should be fully optimised for your targeted keyword.
  • Keyword alignment with user intent. Make sure each page’s keyword aligns with what your audience is searching for and, for small sites just starting out, avoid high-volume keywords – start off targeting low-volume, high-intent keywords. You’ll start building momentum faster.
  • Internal linking between pages. This is a must to help search engines fully crawl your entire site. Orphan pages (i.e., those with no links to or from them) are at risk of not being indexed by Google and don’t offer a great user experience (UX) either.
  • Avoiding keyword cannibilisation. Essentially, if you have two pages optimised for the same keyword, or a keyword that is very similar, search engines won’t know which one to rank. The result? Often, neither ranks at all.
  • Remove broken links and 404 error pages. Quite simply, they harm SEO efforts and lead to a poor UX.
  • Fix thin content. Pages with very little useful or original content don’t perform well in search. Strengthening or expanding them helps search engines understand their value and improves ranking potential. There are a few approaches to doing this, but a strong starting point is to Google your target keyword, analyse the top-ranking pages, and then create content that is more comprehensive, useful, and better structured than what is currently ranking. The goal is to ensure your page is rich in relevant topics, semantic keywords, and fully answers the intent behind the search.

2. Blogging: Fuel for visibility

Every blog post is a new opportunity to rank in search results and showcase your expertise.

Consistent blogging allows you to:

  • Target long-tail keywords
  • Answer customer questions
  • Build topical authority in your industry

Businesses in Bath that blog regularly don’t just get more traffic; they build trust before a customer even makes contact. Blogs are also excellent for re-purposing – post them on your social media platforms or share in a newsletter.

The key to blogging is posting quality content consistently. One high-quality blog post each month is far superior to four poorly written posts.

In the age of AI, it’s easy to have ChatGPT or Claude do the heavy lifting, but they should be used only as tools. Excellent for first drafts and avoiding the doom of a blank page, but AI should never replace a human writer or editor. After all, AI can’t (yet) replicate real-world experience and human nuance.

Neil Patel, a leading SEO expert, analysed AI and human-written content. The study found that human-generated content generated over five times as much traffic as AI-generated content. And for luxury brands in Bath, especially, over-reliance on AI can be even more critical, as detectable AI content can quickly undermine a brand’s trustworthiness.

And let’s not forget AI-generated hallucinations. Deloitte Australia recently fell foul of this when it relied on AI to generate a 237-page government report that contained fabricated academic references, false quotes, and fake footnotes. The result? A hefty partial refund and a whole heap of negative PR that undermines the firm’s reputation.

3. Landing pages: Capture demand

Landing pages are standalone pages on your website that are not linked from the site’s main navigation bar and are designed to target specific services, locations, or customer needs.

Instead of having one generic service page, effective SEO strategies create multiple focused pages that:

  • Match specific search queries
  • Provide clear, relevant information
  • Drive conversions

The more precisely you match what someone is searching for, the more likely you are to rank and convert. Landing pages can be especially useful when pairing SEO in Bath with paid media campaigns, with each page carefully crafted to align with the intent of the paid ad and drive conversions.

4. Content clusters: Build authority

Search engines favour websites that demonstrate expertise.

Content clusters do this by:

  • Creating a central “pillar” page on a core topic
  • Supporting it with related pages
  • Linking everything together strategically

This structure signals authority and helps search engines understand the depth of your knowledge.

As an example, a Bath-based estate agency may have a central “property for sale in Bath” pillar page, and surrounding this page will be a supporting content cluster capturing more granular search intent, such as “property for sale in Bathwick,” “property for sale Bear Flat,” “property for sale Newbridge,” and so on.

Many of the sites I have worked on have hundreds, if not thousands, of these pages, designed to capture every keyword imaginable that the brand’s target audience could possibly search for.  However, content clusters need to be built out carefully to avoid cannibilsation, which can harm SEO efforts.

5. Off-page SEO: Backlinks that build trust and boost DA

If on-page SEO is what you say about yourself, off-page SEO, sometimes called digital PR, is what others say about you. Backlinks (links from other websites to yours) are one of the strongest ranking factors. The more search engines like Google see other websites pointing to yours, the more authoritative they view your website – this is called domain authority (DA). The higher your website’s DA, the easier it is to rank.

High-quality backlinks:

  • Increase your site’s credibility
  • Improve rankings
  • Drive referral traffic
  • Help support your on-page SEO efforts

But remember, not all links are equal, and quality matters far more than quantity. In fact, a single high DA backlink from a relevant site is far better from an SEO perspective than multiple spammy links that can penalise your website.

You can check your website’s DA here.

Remember, SEO is an ongoing investment

One of the key things to remember is that SEO takes time; it doesn’t deliver overnight results, but it does compound over time.

Every blog post, every optimisation, every backlink builds momentum. I often liken SEO to running a marathon – with consistent training and effort, you get one step closer to your goal, and the same applies to a website.

If you want your Bath business to be found, trusted, and chosen, consistent SEO is the engine that powers it all.
