One Introduction Could Help Someone Save, Earn or Raise Funds

By James Tanner of Utility Warehouse

Networking is built on introductions. We meet people, learn what they do and then keep them in mind for the moment when someone in our wider network needs their help.

The challenge is remembering exactly who to introduce and why.

So, rather than simply explaining that I work with Utility Warehouse, I want to make it easier to recognise the people, businesses and organisations I may be able to help.

There are three main ways I do that: helping people save money as customers, earn additional income as partners and create another income stream through the Connector programme.

Helping households save money

The first person to think of is someone who would benefit from reviewing their household bills.

They may be worried about rising costs, moving home, approaching the end of a fixed deal or simply wondering whether they are still receiving good value. They might also be a busy parent, an older relative or somebody who keeps meaning to compare their bills but never finds the time.

I make the process simple. They send me a recent energy bill and have access to the accounts or apps for any other services they would like me to review, including broadband, mobiles and some insurance products.

We go through everything together, I explain the options in plain English and they decide whether any changes are right for them. There is no pressure or obligation.

If they choose to switch, I help complete the process and stay with them throughout it. Where customers combine eligible services, they can also benefit from having one monthly bill, one Direct Debit and one password to remember.

The most valuable introduction is often not the person actively asking for help. It is the person who does not yet realise that help is available.

Helping someone earn additional income

The second person to think of is somebody who would value a flexible way to earn extra money.

That could be a parent looking for something that fits around family life, an employee wanting to improve their financial resilience, a self-employed person with an unpredictable income or someone approaching a change in career.

I originally started my own Utility Warehouse business to create an additional £200 to £300 each month. Over time, it became much more than that. It gave me another source of income and eventually helped me create greater flexibility and choice in my own life.

Partners can build at their own pace and around their existing commitments. There is no stock to buy, no products to deliver and no customer payments to collect. My role is to help new partners get started, build their confidence and support them with their first conversations and appointments.

Not everyone wants to build a large business, and they do not need to. For the right person, even a relatively modest additional income could make a meaningful difference.

Helping businesses and communities generate income

The third opportunity is the Connector programme.

A Connector introduces me to someone who may benefit from reviewing their household services. I complete the review, handle the switching process and look after the customer. If the introduction results in a successful customer, the Connector can earn up to £150.

For a business, this can provide an additional income stream without adding another service to deliver. It may be particularly relevant to mortgage brokers, estate agents, letting agents, accountants, business coaches, HR professionals and others who regularly speak to people experiencing changes in their lives or finances.

The same model can also help charities, clubs and societies raise funds through introductions from their communities. They do not need to become experts in household services. They simply make the introduction and I do the rest.

Who has come to mind?

You may not need my help personally today, but somebody in your network might.

It could be a customer concerned about their bills, a friend who would like some extra income, or a business, charity, club or society looking for a simple new source of revenue.

A warm introduction through a group message is all it takes. I will have a friendly, no-pressure conversation, explain the options and look after them properly.
