Your Profile Photo Is Speaking Before You Do

When was the last time you looked at your own profile photo through your ideal client’s eyes?

Before your potential client reads your profile, your website, or even shakes your hand at an event, something else has already made the first introduction: your profile photo.

In networking communities like ours, we often browse the members’ directory before meetings, look people up after conversations, or check someone’s profile when considering a collaboration. In those few seconds, a photo quietly answers some important questions:

Do they look approachable?

Do they seem confident in what they do?

Would I feel comfortable starting a conversation with them?

A strong profile photo shapes first impressions long before any words are exchanged.

I recently had the honour of photographing one of my favourite clients and her fellow members of the Guild of Professional Toastmasters.

Watching them prepare was fascinating. Their uniform takes around 20 minutes to put on properly, and every detail matters. Each element represents years of dedication, training, and experience. Wearing it is a real honour, a visible symbol of the journey they’ve taken.

They hired me so each member would have a unified, professional headshot. A quick selfie simply wouldn’t capture their story. It wouldn’t justify the professionalism, pride, and achievement behind the uniform.

Professional portraits aren’t just nice photos. They are a celebration of accomplishment.

Today I invite you to take a few minutes and look at your profile photo through the eyes of a potential client. Without judgement, ask yourself:

Do I actually have a profile photo?

Is the picture clear and well lit?

Do I still look like this today?

Am I looking directly into the camera? (Eye contact is crucial.)

Can people see my whole face clearly?

Do I look friendly and approachable?

Am I smiling, or do I look too serious or stiff?

Does the image reflect the level of professionalism I want to convey?

Does it give a sense of who I am?

Sometimes small details make a huge difference.

Eye contact in a profile photo is crucial because it helps people feel seen, safe, and connected before you even meet. AI-generated images may look polished, but they rarely capture your true personality or authenticity.

Even a small update can change how people perceive and remember you.

Your profile photo doesn’t need to be perfect. But it should feel true to you, reflecting your personality, professionalism, and the journey that brought you where you are today.

Just like the Toastmasters’ uniforms tell a story of dedication and achievement, your photo should tell the story of who you are and how you show up in your work. People connect with people, and a photo that represents you authentically makes that connection possible.
